The incident took place around 1:40 a.m., Sunday when officers responded to the area of Commerce Street and South Myrtle Avenue for a person lying on the ground, said Officer Matthew Galli on Tuesday afternoon.
Upon arrival, officers found a female lying on the ground, unresponsive. Further investigation showed that the woman was hit by a vehicle which fled the scene of the accident, he said.
The woman was pronounced dead a short time after the officer’s arrival.
The department is asking for the public's help of anyone who may have been in the area near the time of the hit-and-run, or who may have information about the accident to contact Det. Eugene Suarez directly at 845-213-8656 or the station 845-356-7400.
